Welcome to My Patreon Experiment – Exploring Music Composition Together
Hello, I’m Trevor. By day, I’m a professional private online piano and theory teacher, working with students across Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and Australia. I’ve been doing that for over 25 years—and I love it. But this corner of the internet? I’m trying something a little different.
After decades of helping others learn music, I’ve decided to circle back to a hobby I quietly set aside a long time ago to focus on my teaching career: composing. I studied orchestral composition years ago, but it’s been a while, and I’m basically starting fresh—dusting off textbooks, relearning, and exploring both old and new areas of composition in a more personal way. If you’re also navigating your way back to creativity—or just beginning your journey—you’re more than welcome to follow along.
What You’ll Find in This Category
This blog category is where I’m posting my online journal as I return to studying music theory and composition. It’s informal, with no fixed schedule—more of a growing archive than a set of polished lessons or a how-to guide. Over time, I hope it becomes a useful spot for other amateur composers who are trying to figure out where to begin and what to focus on.
Why Follow Along?
I’m not pretending to be a master composer—let’s be clear, I’m learning right alongside you. And that might actually be what makes this useful. Sometimes it’s helpful to see someone else working things out, sharing what they’re reading, and reflecting honestly on what’s working (and what’s not). Whether you’re studying, researching, or just looking for a bit of inspiration, I hope my process gives you a few ideas—or at least a sense that you’re not figuring it out alone.
What Kind of Posts to Expect
Here’s the kind of content I’ll be sharing here:
- Learning Notes – Short reflections on things I’ve just learned—or remembered—from theory, orchestration, or composition practice.
- What I’m Studying – A look at concepts I’m exploring (e.g., melodic contour, harmonic rhythm, counterpoint basics).
- Back to Basics – Revisiting fundamental ideas like cadences, scale degrees, or chord progressions with fresh eyes.
- Resource Roundups – Collections of books, sites, or tools I’ve found helpful—especially for self-paced study.
Want to Follow Along?
If you’re curious to see where all of this leads, feel free to explore more posts in this category—or head over to my Patreon page. There’s a free tier if you just want to drop in and see what I’m working on. I’m not building a polished curriculum here—just sharing what I’m studying as I go. Thanks for checking it out. And if you’re diving into composition too, have fun learning, exploring, and creating.
Until next time,
Trevor
